MILITARY authorities are claiming to have expelled Boko
Haram from the vast Balmo Forest as part of its ongoing campaign against the
terrorists across northeastern Nigeria that has been gaining momentum in recent
weeks.
Over recent months, Boko Haram has captured large swathes of
territory across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, seizing control of about 13
local governments, which were declared part of its caliphate.
Within the last few weeks, however, a fightback has been
mounted led by local vigilantes made up of hunters and the Civilian Joint Task
Force and a lot of the territory has been reclaimed.
Yesterday, Nigeria's
defence headquarters claimed it had reclaimed the sprawling Balmo Forest which
straddles Borno, Bauchi and Adamawa States. One of Boko Haram's main bases, the
forest served as a training site for the insurgents but in a fierce battle
yesterday, during which about 20 terrorists were killed, it was taken.
