Ferrari will unveil the incredible FXX K, the luxury sports
car company's first hybrid supercar. The world-class automobile will be
unveiled this weekend at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit as part of Finali
Mondiali, Ferrari’s annual celebration of the end of the motorsport season.
Performance wise, the FXX K is a monster with 1,035
horsepower from a conventional V12 engine and electric motor. There's a
seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, linked to a pair of electric motors and a
lithium-ion battery pack. It offers an astounding 663 pound-feet of torque,
outperforming similar elite sports cars such as the McLaren P1 GTR’s 986 hp.
The “K” in the vehicle's name stands for KERS ( Kinetic
Energy Recovery Systems). These two-motor advanced systems have been used in
Formula One, but never so aggressively used in a production car like this. One
motor drive the wheels and recovers kinetic energy during braking, while the
second acts as a generator to keep battery charge up and to power electrical
accessories.
LaFerrari’s HY-KERS system also gets four new modes that
enhance performance based on the situation. "Qualify" provides
maximum performance for short durations, “Long Run” adds endurance, “Manual
Boost” gives the car an instant jolt of torque that's effective for a lane pass
and “Fast Charge” focuses power to recharging the car's battery.
The FXX K can be yours for $2.2 million, but for that price
you actually don't own it. The vehicle is a member of Ferrari's XX family,
which loans developmental prototypes which are not street legal to ultra-rich
car enthusiasts. The owners race these supercars on tracks during private
sessions that Ferrari transports the vehicle to or at Ferrari events. Then the
cars go back to Ferrari where they perform maintenance and upkeep the vehicles
under the company's Corse Cliente program.
The numerous
eye-popping body modifications have increased downforce by up to 50 percent,
nearly 1,200 pounds of downforce at 124 miles per hour.
Electronically, the FXX K is state-of-the-art including
programmable E-Diff electronic differential, F1 Trac traction control,
high-performance ABS and Racing SSC (Side Slip Angle Control) that is specially
calibrated to suit the car's tires.
Speaking of tires, even the Pirelli slick tires are high
tech. They feature embedded sensors that monitor longitudinal, lateral and
radial acceleration, as well as temperature and pressure.
