Scottish police begin enforcing new drink-drive limit north of the border

New limit brings Scotland into line with Europe, but UK Government says it has no plans to follow suit.
Police have begun enforcing Scotland’s new drink-drive limit, which is in line with much of Europe but lower than the rest of the UK.

The legal limit was cut after midnight on Thursday, from 80mg to 50mg of alcohol in every 100ml of blood, and by 6am four people had been arrested for breaching the level.
The change means that motorists could be breaking the law after one glass of wine or one pint of beer, and campaigners have urged drivers not to drink at all.

Michael Matheson, Scotland’s Justice Minister, said the move would help save lives and cut the number of road accidents.
