Healthy eating, exercise and brain training could slow down
cognitive decline in older adults, according to a recent study.
Researchers led by Professor Miia Kivipelto from the
Karolinska Institutet in Sweden assessed the effects on brain function of a
comprehensive intervention aimed at addressing some of the most important risk
factors for age-related dementia, such as high body-mass index and heart
health.
For the study, researchers collected and analyzed data from
more than 1,000 people from across Finland, aged 60 to 77 years old. Half of
the participants were randomly allocated to the intervention group, and half
allocated to a control group, who received regular health advice only. All of
the study participants were deemed to be at risk of dementia, based on
standardized test scores.
